OSTARA March 20-23, 2011 ~ Historically on March 21st
Ostara Sabbath- The Spring Equinox or Vernal Equinox is all about the balance between Winter and Summer. Gaia looks for equilibrium from death of last year's harvest to the planting of a new harvest. This marks the Goddesses return after the long Winter hibernation when the young God and Goddess consummate their love for one another.
This day represents a time when death has no power over the living and it is celebrated as a birth of new life. This is a time to enjoy the child within us all with festivals, feasts and using symbols from ancient times to honor the Goddess.
The rabbit, eggs and a basket are all symbols that have been used during Ostara for thousands of years. Pagans and other faiths will color eggs, arrange sweets in hand-woven baskets and give stuffed rabbits. Many of the animals, insects and fish will bear their young during this fruitful time of plenty.
Many Pagans will honor Ostara by ridding themselves of bad habits or character flaws. Examples are smoking, drinking in excess and swearing, but every person has a list of their own that can be drawn from during Ostara. I've combined my favorite spell with a little personal mental cleansing.
Wish It Away Spell
What you'll need:
- Three Large fallen leaves.
- Black marker.
- Two cups birdseed.
- Bowl
While outdoors, make a circle around a table or bench. Call to the Goddess Isis who holds nature dear, the Elements and the Goddess and God to cast their favor to you. Now write three negative aspects of your life that you would like to change and place each in the bottom of the bowl.
- Goddess Isis, Lord and Lady I ask for favor.
- Support this banishment so I will not waver.
- When the leaves turn to dust and the birdseed is through.
- May I turn away from these things and start anew.
Thank the Goddess Isis, the Lord and Lady and the Elements. Set the bowl out for the birds to enjoy and say the spell every day until the birdseed is gone. Bury the remaining dust and particles.
